Pinewood Derby

Joseph and Alex with their awards.

This year we had the *privilege* of making two Pinewood Derby cars.  It was an adventure, but they were ready to run Saturday when Derby time came.  Alex got to make a car and run the derby for his second Cub Scout event. He has yet to attend a den meeting, just an Arrow of Light ceremony and a Pinewood Derby. He is looking forward to Tuesday's Den meeting, especially if his mom gets his Cub Scout uniform ordered!  Joseph is old hand at the Derby with two first place cars in his previous outings.  Would the winning trend continue?  Would Alex's car place?  Would mom's skills building cars come through for another year of racing?  I have a huge fear of our cars falling apart on the first run since we don't have anywhere to do a practice run.  So many unanswered questions...

Joseph had a gold, racer style car for his 3rd Pinewood Derby.

Alex's first Pinewood Derby was a silver, sportscar.

Joseph and Alex pose with some of their Cub Scout friends in front of the brand new derby track.

Joseph's luck held, and he ends his Pinewood Derby days as a first place winner in his den every year!  Congrats to Joseph!  He also won "Best Webelos Car."
Too bad his mom didn't get his Webelos badge and Arrow of Light badge sewn on his uniform.  He has done great in Cub Scouts!

Alex's car ended in a five-way tie for second place.  After the "tie breaker," he was 4th (we think) in the Wolf Den.  He received a medal for "Best Wolf Car."

Mecham Family Pinewood Derby Cars
2012-Tarheel Blue, 2013-Silver Bullet-Alex,
 2013-Gold Racer-Joseph, 2011-Red Racer

In the open racing, we raced all four cars that we have made.  The girls got to race the two cars from Joseph's previous Derbies.  The red car won "Best Design" in open division (way to go Grandpa!).  In the Mecham Family Heat, the Tarheel Blue won, Gold Racer was 2nd, Silver Bullet was 3rd and Red Racer was 4th.  It was fun to see all four race for mom since she has put the most work into all the cars!  Only one car next year and then Grandpa will be home from his mission.  Maybe he and Alex can do Alex's final car:)  Done for another year!  Maybe we will start working on next year's car in the summer so we don't have so many late nights.  I was very proud of
