Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I am grateful for the work of Dr. King and all of those who sacrificed to make it possible for all people to dream the same dreams and have the same opportunities to achieve them.  Alex colored the picture above at school.  He's very proud of his work and the fact that Dr. King's tie is purple, just like in the picture they had at school.  The girls call him "Martin" because we have a darling children's board book called The Story of Martin Luther King Jr. They walk by the fridge and look at the picture and carry "Martin" around, much to Alex's distress that they'll ruin his picture.  The book talks about a young Martin who wanted to have a nice school and to be able to drink out of all of the water fountains and eat at all the restaurants.  This book is excellent and the kids really understand it well.
In our family, we often talk about how the work that Martin Luther King Jr.did made our family possible.  We are grateful for him and hope that we can teach our children to dream and to help others reach their dreams.  It's important to start early teaching children about love and acceptance of all people.  I like how one parent explained MLK Day to his children.  On the  R House blog, the dad said "monday is an important day, boys. it's a day that we remember to love everyone no matter what they look like."

If we could all remember this, wouldn't the world be a much better place.
