The family poses in the majestic La Plata Mountains.
La Plata means "silver". The mountains were named for one of many minerals that were and are mined here.
Part 2 of Memorial Day was a fun mountain adventure up the canyon toward Telluride. It was a graduation party for a young man who goes to church with us. His mom fried over 80 homemade doughnuts and we enjoyed yummy elk burgers and amazing scenery and outdoor adventures!
Alex pauses next to the waterfall to pose for mom.
A real live trommel. The family we were visiting had ancestors that staked the land in a mining claim in the 1800s. They have mined the land since then.
Joseph looking very handsome in the hills.
Grace poses in front of the pond.
This waterfall is to the side of the pond. It is so beautiful.
Joseph had to climb the waterfall.
And guess who was mad that she wasn't allowed to climb the waterfall?
They did get to play in the creek and had a great time making a dam. The water was icy cold (melted snow gets that way).
All of the girls joined Nathan to build a dam in the stream. We were invited to the mountains by Nathan's family to celebrate his high school graduation. He is a great kid and played with all of the kids and showed them the property.
Nathan is pouring "mud" into the trommel to look for gold. The ore falls to the bottom and runs down the sluice. It was really neat to see.
The kids all had a chance to help mine for real gold. They are panning the gold that was sorted by the smaller trommel. We actually found several small gold flecks. They showed us some bigger pieces of gold they have found in the past.
