Fiery Furnace Fieldtrip

Joseph crawling through the 3rd grade hole.  It gets its name because only third graders can make it through.

One of the amazing views on the hike.  The Fiery Furnace is in Arches National Park.  Lucky for us, this amazing field trip was a mere 25 minute bus ride door to trail head.  We're blessed with awesome outdoor adventures here in Moab.

Joseph's teacher, Ms. Chelsi, attempting to make it through the Lemon Squeeze. She was too big.  Not all of the 3rd and 4th graders could make it through it was so narrow.  Joseph had no problem.

Joseph getting ready to crawl through an arch.
In the arch.  I couldn't get to the other side to get a picture coming out.

Joseph's entire class went on the field trip, along with five Park Rangers and six parents.  The Park Rangers did an amazing job leading the hike, giving the kids fun holes to climb through, slot canyons to squeeze through and arches to look at. They also did an education section at the beginning about predators and prey, decomposers and the food web. I learned a lot from them.
Surprise Arch
It's really hard to get a picture of the arch because it is surrounded by towering fins and rock walls. I couldn't get back far enough to get the entire arch.

Descending the Furnace.  It was a beautiful day for a hike, a bit breezy, but the rain held off until later today and all of the kids and grown ups had a great trip.  The Fiery Furnace is a huge series of fins, rocks and arches. It is not recommended to hike there along because it's so easy to get lost.  I'm happy that I got to go with Joseph's class and can't wait to go back again sometime. It is definitely not a trip to young kids.  The 3rd and 4th graders did fine. I don't know if Alex could make it through some of the areas.

  1. You are sooo lucky to live there! It is our dream to move to southern utah to live. Too bad there isn't any construction opportunities :( We love to play on all those rocks.
